Today's music is filled with yesterdays sounds. Often in music artist use other artist music to either get noticed, pay homage,or to further their popularity. I am not against ,and it's fine if you don't try and make any money off of it without consent. One of the biggest recognized mistakes of this is "Ice Ice Baby" by Vanilla Ice. The sample that they used was from a Queen-David Bowie song called "Pressure" I wasn't there to say,but someone had to know where that music came from. I think V-Ice really didn't know at first, but he found out when he got slapped with a pretty hefty law suit.
Now a days it's common to hear a song with an old hook or Melody in it. When done the right way with all the rights given to use the original music there are no problems. This is not a new thing it's been going on for sometime now. I think a lot of people would say that Diddy brought this to the for front but believe me he was not alone. Famous artist like Snoop Dog, and Dr. Dre have been down the same road and have had much success from it. Another song that had much success was a cover of a song by Dolly Parton called "I will always love you" Song by Whitney Houston for the sound track of the movie "Body Guard" Many people had no clew it was a Dolly song. Another song that was crossed over to Hip-Hop(mostly where one will find sampling) was Ghetto Super Star, the melody is from a song called "Islands in the stream" song by Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton.
Here is a link with some info about Sampling
The reason for this blog is because of the passing of the late great Etta James. One of the most recent sampling of an old song for a new song is by Flo Rida. I think it's just called "Good Feeling" The hook is from a song call "Something got a hold on me" song by Etta James. Flo uses the being of Etta song as his hook.
I'm giving you both to watch. Etta's first/Second Flo Rida. If for some reason the video is not playing let me know. Often You tube will take unofficial videos down. Etta's song was also covered by Christina Aguilera, and she payed tribute to Etta by singing her song "At Last" in the memorial service. RIP Etta I will be down in the basement tonight!
Personal note: I am very bad at spelling and grammar. I'm asking you the reader, if you see something or read something that is not right please let me know. I will fix it so that whomever else reads the blog can enjoy it without the mistakes. Thank you and have a good one.
